Synopsis

Israel: Towards a Future of Possibility

October 18-25, 2014 - Agenda

A land lapped by the waves of the Mediterranean is making waves itself. Back in 1948, the Israeli economy tilted left with an emphasis on kibbutzim, collective communities based on agriculture. Today it is a booming entrepreneurial economy fueled by innovation. It leads the world in venture capital as a share of GDP. In Bloomberg’s recent list of the 30 Most Innovative Countries in the World, Israel was #1 in R&D intensity and #10 in High-tech density. It boasts the highest number of scientists, technicians, and engineers per capita in the world, an astonishing accomplishment for a small country less than 70 years old.

Israel teems with history, culture and tradition. Yet, it is also known for its bohemian travelers and avant garde urban centers. It constitutes an exciting laboratory wherein a culture is created through continuous discussion, reevaluation and reshaping in modern times. An exploration of Israel’s multiple sceneries – as seen through its art, science and technology, environmental initiatives and social discourse - offer unique opportunities for expanding understanding and appreciation of the rich fabric of both historical and contemporary Israel.

With its robust economic growth, highly educated population and technological prowess, this land of a storied past and a dynamic present is heading towards a future of boundless possibility.
